CONFERENCE – Boğaziçi University School of Foreign Languages 2nd ELT Conference.
Towards Higher Education (THE): Teaching for a Better World in the 21st Century
27-28 September 2019, Boğaziçi University (Istanbul, Turkey)

Target Audience: Instructors and researchers focusing on Preparatory/ Pre-sessional/ Academic Bridge/ Pathway/ EAP Programs worldwide.

We have a dream.

We are envisioning a higher education setting in which learners from different backgrounds interact with each other on issues surrounding them in the world and collaborate to solve problems by thinking creatively and critically in and beyond the classroom. In this setting learners are able to integrate technology in their learning while analyzing, filtering and synthesizing the digital information that they receive. As global citizens, these learners are aware of global and local issues and approach these problems in a way that represents their diverse backgrounds. Having acquired all these skills, they perform in and out-of-class tasks while acquiring a foreign language.

We are also envisioning a higher education setting where teachers are lifelong learners who continue their professional development. With this, they equip themselves with the knowledge of global issues and integrate them into their creative English language classrooms by utilizing 21st century skills that are needed in a higher education setting. These teachers assume the responsibility of empowering students with knowledge and skills of cooperative problem-solving, informed decision making, and the ability to see issues from multiple perspectives. In this way, teachers give students ample opportunities to actively participate in engaging tasks in which they think critically, develop cognitive skills and negotiate meaning in order to resolve the issues at hand.

In pursuit of this dream, we as Boğaziçi University School of Foreign Languages are organizing an ELT conference designed to address the theme of “teaching for a better world”.  We are interested in hearing about research studies and effective/best practices regarding
